Ecological Footprint

The ecological footprint measures how much biologically productive land and sea area is needed to supply what a population consumes and to absorb its waste, expressed in global hectares. It is compared against biocapacity, the area actually available.

The method was developed in the 1990s by Mathis Wackernagel and William Rees and is maintained by the Global Footprint Network. It counts cropland, grazing land, forest, fishing grounds, built-up land, and the forest area needed to absorb CO₂ emissions. Earth Overshoot Day, the date each year when consumption exceeds what the planet regenerates, comes from this accounting.

The carbon component makes up roughly 60% of the global footprint, which is why the term appears alongside carbon footprint in search results. They are not the same measure. A carbon footprint reports greenhouse gases in tCO₂e; an ecological footprint reports land area in global hectares and covers water, food, timber, and fish as well as carbon.

For corporate reporting the ecological footprint is rarely the required metric. Regulators and frameworks ask for tCO₂e under the GHG Protocol, and for water, waste, and biodiversity as separate ESRS or CDP data points. The footprint is useful for communication and for context in a materiality assessment. Use it alongside a GHG inventory, not instead of one.

It is expressed in units of CO₂e per functional unit of the product.
